Up Close and Personal - the inside track on life as a VFX supervisor Leading VFX supervisors Michael Owens from Industrial Light & Magic and Kent Houston from the Peerless Camera Company bare all in a lively and frank discussion on over three decades of pioneering and award-winning optical and digital effects work.

Michael Owens joined ILM in the early eighties as a visual effects cameraman on Return of the Jedi, Star Trek II - The Wrath of Khan, and Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom as well as ET. He swiftly moved on to become a VFX supervisor and in 1988 won a BAFTA Film Award for Best Special Effects on The Witches of Eastwick starring Jack Nicholson. He has since supervised the effects on major movies such as Oliver Stone's The Doors, 101 Dalmations, Bringing Out the Dead and Clint Eastwood's Space Cowboys.

Michael is currently in production on Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz. VFX supervisor Kent Houston has recently blown away audiences with his breathtaking effects for high altitude action movie Vertical Limit directed by Martin Campbell. Kent is also well known for his work with director Terry Gilliam on the movies Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Twelve Monkeys. However, Kent's work with Gilliam stems right back to the late seventies and early eighties when he contributed optical effects to Monty Python's Life of Brian (directed by Terry Jones) and The Meaning of Life, Time Bandits and to sci-fi-fantasy film Brazil. So it's over..

I had a wonderful 3 days in London, attending the Production Show. The third day was the day of the Film Effects Festival. I had a chance to talk among the guys who made films such as The Gladiator, The Patriot, Enemy at the Gates, Small Soldiers, Indiana Jones, Casper, Star Wars etc.

My conference was about the future of the Cinema and TV and it was called "Beyond 2001". In my presentation, I demonstrated "The Uncontrollable Characters" and showed some scenes from the worlds first "self-producing movie", the ROBOLAB that we're working on. I also demonstrated the POINT&PAINT, The "PAP" format..

The most pleasing response came from a BBC reporter, as he said he couldn't believe in what he saw, all that was science-fiction and I was fifty years ahead of the industry.. I was really flattered...

Maybe it's worth working 20 hours a day..
